Chapter 20p4 – Come On

“Come on!” called Tic, and the whole squad pounded down the passageway, chasing Dr. Fester. The old man cackled and coughed as he led the way past chambers sealed behind labels like EXTRACTION, REFINEMENT, TRIGGERING, and THEORETICAL MODELLING. Finally they rounded a corner and found a wider, high-ceilinged hub area connected to multiple passageways, with an archway labelled EXIT opening onto an upwards-climbing ramp.

As the rest of the squad came up behind Tic, he heard the echo of running footsteps from a passageway across the hub room. A few seconds later, a dozen Liberati spilled into the room, and in the midst of them stood…

BOLTER!!

The hub room amplified the voice, the sound waves ringing Tic’s skull like a bell. He covered his ears and dove for cover through the nearest opening. The lasers followed closely after.

The squad was caught off-guard and rattled by the force of Lady Libden’s voice. In mere seconds, three Entulovians and one yeti had fallen under the Liberati’s onslaught, and Tic found himself ducking further back into cover, with Jeffries and Cogs beside him.

“We’re taking fire!” Jeffries shouted into his handset. “Where are those reinforcements?!”

“They’re just reaching the Detention block,” reported the curator.

Jeffries swore and leaned out from the passageway to return fire. A laser skimmed his shoulder and just missed Tic’s head.

Libden and the Liberati pressed through the hub room and up the Exit ramp. Libden called back, “YOU’RE THROUGH, BOLTER! YOU’RE ALL DOOMED! BUT I’VE GOT EVERYTHING I NEED…” She held up the Adam Astrobot action figure and laughed as one of the Liberati rolled something down the ramp behind them.

“Get down!” cried Cogs, grabbing Tic and diving deeper down the tunnel as the grenade exploded.
